Sharing a House

Sharing a House
Words and Music by Dottie Burman

I was looking for a way to spend the summer.

So I checked the local papers for a plan.

There were travel ads galore

But what pleased me even more

Were the ads for summer shares the paper ran.

I had never shared a house before that summer.

So I called an ad. They said I sounded nice.

Their insight was so keen, they took me sight unseen

As long as I agreed to pay the price.

According to the ad, the kind of things they had

Included private room and ocean view.

The people were mature, congenial for sure.

We'd share in all the chores we had to do.

Chorus:

I was sharing a house, sharing a house,

Sharing a house for the summer.

I was sharing a house, sharing a house,

Sharing a house for the summer.

The month of June was just around the corner.

So I thought I'd spend a weekend in the sun.

I didn't have a care. I had bought a half a share

So every other weekend I'd have fun.

When I arrived I saw a crowd of people.

There had been a big mistake somebody said.

Both weekends, A and B, arrived concurrently

And they told me that I'd have to share a bed.

My bedmate's name was Stan. Imagine if you can

He looked at me and acted rather bored.

It almost made me weep, when he went right off to sleep

And he lay upon his back all night and snored.

Chorus:

Well, we made a chart to rotate all the cooking.

And we all agreed except Stan made a fuss.

He wouldn't cook the food if he wasn't in the mood,

But he ate three times as much as all of us.

The ocean view we had was pretty awful.

I finally climbed up to the roof one day.

Binoculars, I found, would help me look around.

I saw the ocean, seven miles away.

The summer ads you read, can fool you and mislead,

You must investigate before you go.

One thing's clear to see, group living's not for me,

And so this summer one thing that I know is I'm NOT-

Chorus:

Sharing a house, sharing a house,

Sharing a house for the summer.

I'm NOT sharing a house, sharing a house,

Sharing a house for the summer!
